This weekend has been quite a sad one (and no, I’m not referring to Pat’s death on Eastenders), with the announcements that two of my favourite couples have decided to call it a day.
On Friday evening actor and comedian Russell Brand issued a statement revealing that earlier that day he had filed papers in Los Angeles filing for divorce from his wife Katy Perry citing ‘irreconcilable differences’.
Brand said, “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”
The pair had reignited speculation that a split was imminent after spending Christmas Day thousands of miles apart; he in Cornwall and she in Hawaii with friends. They’d previously been very vocal about how they were looking forward to their family Christmas with Katy’s parents so this a huge diversion from the original plan. In the days afterwards Russell was spotted around London without his wedding ring whilst Katy seemed to go into hiding. But the divorce papers blind-sided the press, particularly given their insistence that all was fine. Katy is yet to release a statement.
That same day Welsh couple opera singer Katherine Jenkins and TV presenter Gethin Jones announced that their engagement was off. It is thought that they ended their engagement because they couldn’t agree on when to start a family.
At least one couple is happy though – Saturdays singer Rochelle Wiseman has become engaged to her JLS boyfriend Marvin Humes after he popped the question on New Year’s Eve whilst holidaying in the Caribbean. Congratulations!
